1 cup berries (blackberries, strawberries, whatever you have on hand)

1 cup orange juice (may substitute water)

1 frozen banana (freeze these without the peel, in a ziplock bag ahead of time)

1 T coconut oil (optional, but really healthy)

Whipped cream (1 cup heavy whipping cream, 1 T vanilla, 4 T sugar, whip it with an elecric beater until its the way you want it). Note: this makes enough for 10 servings!

Puree all ingredients except whipped cream in a blender, and top with whipped cream. Enjoy!

Makes 2 or 3 servings.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, many people are left with a ton of turkey, both on the carcass, and another whole one – or more – in the freezer!

After a day or two of turkey sandwiches, you are probably wondering what to do with your leftover turkey. Maybe last years recipes are forgotten or lost, or you never found a favorite way to use leftover turkey, or you are just looking for something new. If you would like a turkey soup recipe, I think you know what to do (click on the link).

Some of our family’s favorite ways of using leftover turkey are: turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches, turkey tetrazzini, and, of course, turkey soup. After many years, I have found an easy way to make turkey soup that is delicious! Go here for the turkey soup recipe. And when you have found another way to use leftover turkey that you love, preserve it in your own blank recipe book!

If you are like many folks, you have a recipe or two that is unique to your family, that you enjoy every Thanksgiving. And like many people, these family heirloom recipes are kept on index cards, or scraps of paper that look like they have been through a month of Thanksgivings! I know some of our favorite recipes have been kept on increasingly fragile pieces of paper that, with their folds and food spilled on them have gotten hard to read. Heaven forbid that anyone of these recipes gets lost, with how well loved they are!

My Personal Recipe Books offer the perfect solution to saving your family’s favorite Thanksgiving recipes, and all of your family’s favorite recipes, whether it’s the special gourmet truffles you make at Christmas time, or your easiest, most inexpensive delicious dinner that has become a regular at your table.

With tabbed dividers that you can label and decorate however you choose, these books are versatile, and destined to become a family heirloom. So….while your favorite recipes – and possibly new recipes that you would like to preserve – are fresh on your palate, take a few minutes to jot them down in your own recipe book.

Recently our son got married, and, being the one responsible for the reception, I searched for some time for the perfect recipe, and even tried one from ahead of time. After deciding that the one we tried at home was agreeably inexpensive, it was too much like 7-up, and therefore tasted too inexpensive and simple for what we wanted at our son’s wedding. Well according to our children and our guests, the following recipe that I got here was a smashing success! Yes, it was very tasty, not too 7-upy. More expensive, but worth it for our son’s wedding! A great recipe to include in your own blank recipe book:

Great Wedding Punch

2 liter Gingerale
2 liter Club Soda
1 bag frozen strawberry & 1/2 bag frozen raspberry blended.
1 can of frozen lemonade
1 can of frozen raspberry grape
1 quart of frozen sherbet! put sherbet in last and let melt!! AWESOME!!!!!

Cheers!

I had the pleasure of sitting at a dinner with her at a women’s function, and out of the blue, she offered one of her little tips. She actually came out and said that whenever she finds a recipe she likes, whether it is in a book or wherever, she copies it down into her own recipe book! Now she’s gotta have an impressive recipe book indeed!

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, and so I made his favorite dish, Beef Stroganoff. Now, this is one of those dishes that his mom made, and he just loves it. When we got married, I asked my new father-in-law, Madison, what the recipe was, since my mother-in-law passed away before I met my husband. Madison didn’t know where her version of the recipe was, and he gave me very vague instructions on how to make one of his wife’s well-favored recipes.

If my late mother-in-law would’ve had a blank recipe book to record her recipes in, nobody would be left to wonder, and it would’ve lessened the stress on one young bride who didn’t know how to cook! (Now my secret’s out!) A blank recipe book should really be in everyone’s kitchen! I’m sure Madison would’ve looked there for the recipe, had she had one of these.

So, for many years, I either didn’t make beef stroganoff, or guessed at how to do it correctly. I have, I think gotten pretty good at this, without ever actually looking up a recipe online (!) until today, the day AFTER his birthday! (I did make it yesterday!)

This one recipe strikes me in particular. Maybe it’s because of the white wine, the green onions, or the way the mushrooms look in the picture, or all of the above. I am going to have to try this recipe! It calls for a lot less sour cream than what I used (what have I done?), but it looks well worth the try!

I will get my version posted here soon.

You know, I was good at math, but I never really understood some things about fractions until I started cooking.

Most recipes involve 1/3 of a cup, or some other fraction, and when you have to double or triple it, well, it is a great kinesthetic and visual aid to learning fractions! The same goes for pints, quarts and gallons. To someone that doesn’t know the difference between those in real life, the classroom may as well be teaching greek, if you ask me! Learning to prepare meals from a recipe really takes learning math from the classroom – to real life. I guess you could say it “brings it home”.

Maybe this is why our forefathers were so smart – they did more cooking at home!

For those of you who are trying to find something else for your children to do besides go on the computer, how about getting them interested in learning how to make something in the kitchen, and recording their creation in their own blank recipe book?

Children are notorious for liking to help, especially the younger ones, and if encouraged, will often keep this up.

You could start with something that you need to make anyway, and give the child a task, like cutting something up (if old enough), or stirring something, while you add ingredients.

Having them copy a recipe into their own personal recipe book is starting a lifelong good habit. A great way to get some quality time in with your children! :)
